History of Perfume

Perfume goes back to before the Bible

It is a fact that many people like perfumes. Most perfumes lovers wear it everywhere; it varies from students at school, to workers going to work or even shoppers going to the mall. If you are a history nut or are simply curious, here is the ancient history of perfumes. Well, since you started reading, go further and learn how the perfume’s got introduced in to the world. You’ll do yourself a favor because the more you know about your passion; the better you get at choosing the right ones.

So how long do you guess perfume has been around? If you said couple of hundred years, you are wrong! Try thousand of years!!! In the beginning, when magic was strong they used to burn different kinds of herbs, resins etc. and this produced various smells. Perfume it Latin means through smoke and is written as two words: per and fume.

As you may have guessed it, we owe our good smelling northern bodies to the Egyptians. They use to use it all the time when they did rituals such as mummification. Another interesting fact is that today’s perfumed oils are based on ointments and balms they used. The records show that perfume was used by the Egyptian to put on bodies for either smelling or looking better. Also they were used for healing purposes. In the Middle Kingdoms as well as the Old Kingdom, this was well regarded. It should also be noted that the perfumes were specifically used in religious ceremonies.

But how did this enchanting body of liquid, made its way through Europe, Asia and even on the African continent is very captivating. Well what historians agree on is that the Egyptians exported their knowledge of perfume to Rome, Greece and even to the Islamic world. The Islamists are the grand responsible for bringing the perfume to the Christian community. However something happened when the Roman Empire was defeated, the perfume stopped running however everything changed in an instant in the 12th century when it was decided that international trade was introduced.

Next, it was introduced to the Asian market specifically China. In the perfume industry went incredibly well. Business was sky high and profits were through the roof. Among others that were very much interested in perfume you can’t add the Arabs, the Hindus, the Israelites and the Carthaginians. All of this is very interesting and captivating but the number one lovers of perfume are the French. To prove how much they loved perfume, a perfumed gloved was even created in France. According to historians, this is where most producers set up shop because business was booming.

With the technology developing perfume really took a drastic change in the 19th century and up. Just like a good wine the older it is the better it tastes. Well the same thing can be said about perfume. The more experiments they make the better the perfume becomes. Eventually new fragrances were born as knowledge of chemistry got better. Finally that it could become a more lucrative industry if they bottled the liquid.

It is rumoured that Napeleon like girly scents for himself
